What the IVAR Really Is: A System, Not a Shelf

The IVAR is not a shelf. It is a modular system made of separate parts: uprights in raw pine, shelves, drawers, doors. You create the configuration according to your needs.

This system has existed since the 1970s-1980s. It is one of the few IKEA products sold practically unchanged for over 40 years. The parts are easily found. But some design choices date back to an era with different manufacturing standards.

The untreated raw pine is its main asset (customizable: paint, oil, stain) and its main drawback (sensitive to humidity, stains, splinters).

Parts That Break: Pins, Uprights, Fixings

The Shelf Pin: The Weak Point of the IVAR

IVAR shelves are held on by metal pressure pins inserted into the vertical rails of the uprights. Four pins per shelf. Quick to install. In theory.

Two distinct problems are documented.

Problem No. 1: The pins come pre-installed in the rails, not in a bag. To move them, you have to force them. Forcing on raw pine risks tearing the rail or splitting the upright.

Problem No. 2: Manufacturing tolerance. On some uprights, the rails are slightly too wide. The pin inserts but does not click. It holds visually, not mechanically. A shock is enough to dislodge the shelf.

Recent customer feedback indicates that the new metal pins require regular re-tightening. The revision of the system is considered a regression compared to the previous version.

What to do:

  • Test each pin by hand before loading the shelf. It should resist a slight vertical pull.
  • If a pin does not click, move it one notch on the rail. Do not force it.
  • If the upright is split around a notch, replace the upright. The pin will never hold.

The Upright: When the Pine Splits

The wood around the rails is thin. A mallet placed incorrectly, a misaligned pin, or solo assembly are enough to split the pine over a few centimeters.

A short crack (less than 3 cm, not crossing the rail): wood glue and clamping for 24 hours. A crack crossing the rail or a torn rail: replace the upright.

Assembly by two people is officially recommended by IKEA. On a 179 cm upright held alone, the wood is forced asymmetrically. This is the typical situation for cracks.

Wall Fixing: Not Optional

The IVAR has no back panel. Its rigidity is almost nonexistent without wall support. An IVAR loaded and not fixed can tip over.

The wall fixing provided must be screwed into a wall stud or into a suitable anchor (concrete, drywall, brick).

From three elements side by side, IKEA recommends a cross-section on one section out of two to stiffen laterally.

Maximum load: 25 kg per shelf, distributed evenly.

Treating the Wood: Before Assembly

The raw pine of the IVAR is neither varnished nor oiled. It will absorb stains and moisture from the first few weeks.

Treat the parts flat before assembly. It's ten times easier than once assembled.

  • Linseed oil or hard oil: protects without changing the appearance. One to two coats, 24 hours drying between each.
  • Paint: apply a primer to the pine. Without it, the paint cracks in less than 6 months.
  • Varnish or stain: colors while keeping the grain visible.

Common Problems and Solutions

The pins fall out on their own after a few weeks.
Rail too wide, no real snap-in. Check each pin by hand. If none click on the entire rail, the upright has a defect — IKEA customer service may offer an exchange.

The upright has splinters.
Sanding grit 120 then 180 before treatment. The raw pine sometimes delivers splinters on the edges upon delivery.

The anchor holes do not align.
Reported on some recent series. Do not force it: ream slightly with a drill bit of the same diameter.

The shelf sags laterally.
Unique cause: wall fixing absent or insufficient. No adjustment will compensate for the absence of a back panel.
